Syd Barrett dies, aged 60

news: Tuesday 11th July 2006

Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of legendary band Pink Floyd, has died aged 60 at his home in Cambridgeshire.

It has been reported that he died from complications arising from diabetes although there are some reports that are linking his death to cancer.

Barrett passed away on Friday (7th July). His brother Alan confirmed he had died with a statement earlier today saying "He died peacefully at home. There will be a private family funeral in the next few days."

Barrett was responsible for penning much of Pink Floyd’s early material and was the original major creative force behind the band. He left Pink Floyd in 1968 after just three years when mental instability (perhaps caused through drug intake) forced him to disappear into relative seclusion.

He was an extremely influential musician and the impact of his work lives on in the music of the countless bands he has influenced throughout the years.
