The Tommys

Rock City, Nottingham on Thu 16th Feb 2006

There are very few all girl bands currently in the music biz, and there are even fewer who can actually put on a decent live performance.

To begin with it wasn’t looking good as The Tommys press department had told me that they would be on stage for 9.45pm and yet we were still staring at an empty stage at 10.15pm- so as you can imagine we wasn’t best pleased considering we had a million and one better things to do than wait around for a practically unknown band.

Then again, we should have known that they wouldn’t make it on time to the stage, being an all female group- it was clear that they probably needed the extra time to make sure their lipstick and shoes matched.

Eventually they arrived on stage, and straight away it was obvious that the band members combined aged would still be ten years younger than me!! I think the bass guitar was actually taller than the band members! Before they had even played a note, I was getting the impression that this was going to be like being back at school when they have a school band play at the end of term concert.

Thankfully within seconds of the opening track ‘Did It Again’ it was obvious that these youngsters knew how to rock- vocalist Jess Bell seemed to have that natural confidence which just can’t be taught- and she could do all of the usual in your face tricks such as walking across the bar, and walking into the centre of the audience whilst belting out the vocals.

But it wasn’t just the vocalist who was impressive to watch, the rest of the band were just as interesting to watch play- Tania Kawalit (Bass) was pounding out the killer basslines with such precision that even NASA would have been impressed! Stevie Shepperson (guitar) is genuinely gifted with her intricate guitar hooks. And the person who keeps it altogether the drummer- Fran Robinson seemed to be incredibly confident banging away on the drums as if her life depended on it.

To give you some idea of what they sound like- they are a cross between the Ramones and Debbie Harry. This is good old-fashioned female punk rock with shit loads of attitude!

The band ploughed through their setlist without any time wasting- short, swift, and very powerful, they even managed to squeeze in a cover of a track by Oasis- ‘Stay Young’, which seemed to go down well with the sparse crowd.

The Tommys were nothing short of amazing to watch- some people would argue that due to their young age that they can’t be that good, but I can safely say that these young ladies can easily put most other groups to shame when it comes to playing live!!

Definitely catch them next time they play in your area.
