Dresden

Glasgow Barfly on Fri 4th Nov 2005

Electro/Indie crossovers, eccentric clothing, synthesisers and a style throwback from the 80’s have been dominating the music scene over the past couple of years. Thankfully Dresden have created the reason why there’s no need to trade in your Harley Davidson for a Volvo Estate just yet.

Dresden are keeping faith to the simplified rock n roll formula introduced by The Stooges and The Jesus and Mary Chain; Fraught energetic riffs and attention grabbing power chords ground down into dirty, guitar fuelled rock. Nostalgia trip it may be, but its one hell of a trip.

Dresden

Similarities in the current music scene can be drawn to The Black Velvets, BRMC and The Beat Up, all harbouring that leather smelling, beer swilling, distortion orientated vibe that The Ramones championed.

‘Crusader’ Sounds rather like The Subways’ ‘City Pavement’, but has a far stronger drive to it, complimented by the thumping bass intro. ‘Save My Soul’ shares the same influences as The Datsuns and more often than not you can hear the sound of 60’s American bands like MC5 beneath the surface of Dresden’s onslaught.

If the future of rock n roll is Dresden, then the future of music is definitely rock n roll.
