Hard-Fi

The Social, Nottingham on Tue 26th Apr 2005

Last time we caught Hard-Fi live, there were more fingers on my hands than there were people at that gig. So when I was informed that they were playing another Nottingham venue called The Social, I had very low expectations of the amount of people that would make the effort to catch these.

The Social in Nottingham, it is a fairly small venue which has an incredible ability to let artistes play before moving onto much bigger things - do the names Coldplay, Starsailor, and The Doves ring any bells? Well they are all were booked to play at the Social long before they had become the mega selling artistes that they are today - except for Starsailor!!

Upon arriving at the venue there was no queue at the door- instantly bringing back memories of just a handful of people at their last gig. However as soon as I had got to the top of the stairs and walked through into the venue- I was startled to see one gigantic mass of bodies. We were so crammed together that you would not have been able to squeeze a bus ticket past us. That is how tightly packed we were.

At this point I was trying to work out how on earth they had become so popular since the last time we caught up with them- I honestly cant remember ever seeing them being hyped up by any national magazine. Don't get me wrong, they truly do deserve to have a huge army of fans, but how they have accomplished that will remain a mystery- although it could have something to do with their splendid tunes???

The songs are powerful and quite bouncy at times- if you imagine the wonderful melodic rock of Ash and then combine that with the killer guitar hooks of The White Stripes, then you will have a fair idea of what these sound like musically.

Their recent single 'Cash Machine' went down a storm with the audience, as well as their new download only single 'Gotta Reason', which judging by the crowd must already have been downloaded as they knew the words to every verse.

Hard-Fi without a doubt look set to create a huge impact on the music scene, and who knows maybe they could even have the same success as Coldplay in the near future. Fingers crossed!
