Erasure

Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on Mon 7th Mar 2005

Erasure kindly decided to grace the city of Nottingham with their flamboyant and vibrant live show at the Royal Concert Hall last night to remind us that music can be fun and quirky and thoroughly enjoyable.

Admittedly I have never been a big fan of Erasure, I was intrigued to see what all the fuss was about. Tickets for this show had sold out long ago, and so Erasure must still be doing something right to keep on selling out venues.

The stage set was a gargantuan forest with tree trunks delving deep into the background. For the first couple of tracks vocalist Andy Bell's stage costume consisted of a pair of white angel wings and dazzling bright white trousers.

Whilst Andy proudly enjoyed taking the limelight, his partner in crime Vince Clarke was tucked away further back in the shadows of the tree trunks and obscured from view by his synthesisers.

Andy has crafted his stage skills to such a high level that you can not help but become mesmerised by the way he prances around the stage in costumes ranging from angel wings to reflective sparkling denim costumes through to just his bright dazzling blue pants. No matter what he did, the audience never lost interest at all, and that must be the sign of a true entertainer.

Like most bands, Erasure were out to promote their latest album Nightbird. And so you would have expected them to keep on mentioning it throughout the set and have the songs dominate the set list with a couple of classics thrown in. Thankfully Erasure aren't like that- to be honest I can't remember them ever mentioning the new album at all, which made a refreshing change.

From start to finish this show was colourful, vibrant, enjoyable and above all, it had great music. As you would expect, it was the golden oldies from Erasures back catalogue that really got the crowd out of their seats and dancing along to classics such as 'A Little Respect', 'Blue Savannah' and 'Sometimes'. Which will always be instant crowd pleasers.

Like all good things, the time just flew by, and after over an hour and half of pure retro electro-pop classics. It was time for Andy And Vince to say goodbye and disappear into the midnight air.

Erasure are one of those bands that are in a league of their own, incredibly entertaining and are one of the few bands that have such a big back catalogue that it must be such a difficult decision for the band to decide which songs to leave out.

Erasure are certainly one of those bands that you must see live before you die!!
