Hard-Fi

Rock City, Nottingham on Thu 27th Jan 2005

Whilst most of the people in Nottingham were at Nottingham's Ice Arena to watch Green Day, a handful of people had gathered at Nottingham's prestigious Rock City to catch a glimpse of London-based band Hard-Fi.

Now usually I wouldn't even entertain the idea of going to see a band that are practically unknown, however seeing as Green Day tickets had sold out many months ago, I was left with very little choice - either stay in and wonder around the house in despair at missing one of my favourite bands, or go to Rock City and catch Hard-Fi.

Rock City was like a ghost town, I counted five other people to begin with - three of which were from the bands street team and two of which were from the record company.

Hard-Fi admittedly have a shit name, but thankfully they can be forgiven due to the fact that they are one of the most impressive up and coming bands to emerge recently.

Their frontman instantly reminded me of Tim Burgess, in the way he moved and sang, as well as the fact he was wearing a combat jacket which would be something the lead singer of Charlatans would also wear.

When playing live they have such a tight sound that it is practically superhuman, although I think they were using a backing track for some of the weird bass sounds, beats and Hammond sounds to create a more fuller sound. To their credit they pulled it off with such coolness that even The Strokes would have trouble being this cool!!

As expected they slipped in their forthcoming single 'Cash Machine' which went down well with the crowd, that had now doubled in size. They played this single halfway through their set which shows that they genuinely believe that they have a set full of great songs, otherwise they would have done the traditional stereotypical thing and played it as their last song just to keep their fans waiting.

Hard-Fi's music is vibrant, powerful, bouncy, fun, and above all great to listen to. It has been a long time since I've seen a band that I genuinely believe will make it onto bigger and better things. These are one of those bands.

They finished the show with 'Living For The Weekend', which is packed full of thunderous bass lines and explosive guitar parts, which I hope will be released as a single, although to be fair all of their tracks are strong enough to be released as a single.

Hard-Fi will be one of those bands that given the right promotion will be an awesome band. In short- you would be mad not to catch these live!!! Music at it's finest!!! If ever I'm given the choice between going to see Green Day or Hard-Fi, I know who I will pick everytime…not Green Day!!
