eGigs interview with Sum 41's Deryck Whibley

ahead of the Eastpak Antidote Tour on Sun 24th Oct 2010

The 6th edition of 'Eastpak Antidote Tour' hits Europe for over one month, from 27th October 2010 to 1st December. The line-up is (obviously) led by Canadian punk rockers, Sum 41, alongside Jim Lindberg's newest venture The Black Pacific, Texas-based rock and rollers The Riverboat Gamblers and, with a reputation that's beginning to overtake them, the up-and-coming Veara. 27 cities across 13 countries will witness the biggest, loudest, punk tour yet.

eGigs spoke to Deryck Whibley lead singer and guitarist of Sum 41 ahead of the UK leg of the 'Eastpak Antidote Tour' which starts this week...

Hi Deryck, how are you?
I'm pretty good.

You're coming to the UK for the Eastpak Antidote Tour are you looking forward to it?
Yes, I always look forward to touring. Playing on stage is always the best bit about being in a band.

Had you heard about the Eastpak Antidote Tour before you signed up for this year?
No, I'd never heard of it. But they approached us and it sounded like a good idea.

Can you remember the last time you played the UK?
It was in 2008 I think, I remember the tour, it was great. It's always been great touring the UK.

Anything you particularly remember about it?
I remember the shows, and I remember just how good the audiences were, and we were really happy with the way it all turned out.

You've got new album 'Screaming Bloody Murder' in the pipeline, how have fans responded to that live?
What do you mean? No one's heard it.

So, you've never played anything from it live yet?
No.

Will this be the first chance for people to hear anything from it on this tour?
Well I don't think we're going to play too much of it yet, as it's not out yet. It's not coming out until the new year, but we might play a song or two.

You're videos are pretty amusing, what's the funniest thing to happen on stage to you?
I got hit with a chicken burger one time, someone threw a whole chicken sandwich in my face, and I got hit with it. It was outdoors and there were a lot of people there.

And what makes you laugh?
I really want to see the new Jackass movie, I'm sure that's going to be funny.

You're support acts on the Eastpak Antidote Tour are The Black Pacific, The Riverboat Gamblers, and Veara. What can you tell us about them?
We were just on the Warp Tour throughout the whole summer with The Riverboat Gamblers, and The Black Pacific's Jim Lindberg used to be in Pennywise, and we know them really well. I've known him for some time, and the other band, Veara, I don't really know very well.

What do you like most about playing live?
I love all of it, I love being on stage, being in front of people, playing with the rest of my band, and playing that I wrote, and that I love. It's all great.

What essentials do you take on tour with you?
I don't actually bring much on tour. I learnt that the hard way, because I brought everything on tour at first, and our van got broken into and everything got stolen, and I lost everything. From that point on, I just bring the bare essentials, a couple of shirts, a couple of pants, and that's about it.

You came out of Canada, do you know what the Canadian music scene is like these days?
I've no idea, I don't live in Canada anymore, and even if I did I don't really care about the scene anymore.

Lastly you used to appear as alter-egos Pain For Pleasure is there any chance they'll make a return to the stage?
I don't know, we don't really think about things like that, we'll probably play 'Pain For Pleasure' on the stage. There's no plans for it.

Have you got any plans to come back in the summer over festival season?
We're going to be touring for a whole year, so we will be going back and forth I'm sure, but I don't know yet.

Have a good time on tour.
Okay, cool.
