The Inverness Ironworks is a purpose built live music venue in the centre of Inverness, with an intimate capacity of 1000 people. I had never been before, so was quite surprised to find that a band as big as Trivium were playing in such a small venue.
The Floridian band are on a 16-date UK tour 'Into The Mouth Of Hell We Tour', to promote their most recent album 'Shogun'.
I arrived to find the venue packed, but not sold out. The crowd had a range of age groups – from young kids accompanied by unimpressed parents, to enthusiastic teenagers trying to push their way to the front, to old rockers who stood at the back and observed the show from the comfort of the bar.
First up was Tennessee death metal band Whitechapel, who played a short set of 4 songs. They had a few dedicated fans in the audience who knew all their songs, the energy was high right from the start which built up to a wall of death for the final song. They played a great gig and even took the time to sign the ticket of an excited fan in the front row.
The crew were all very organised, as they hastily re-arranged the stage for the next support band.
Next up was Cleveland thrash band Chimaira, who got the crowd further warmed up with their energetic set. They got the circle pits on the go, and had everyone singing along to 'Pure Hatred' with the lyrics "…I Hate Everyone…" After playing their ferocious set, they promise to return to Scotland very soon.
After two excellent support bands, who got the crowd ready for a good thrash, came the band of the night, the reason why all those people were squashed into the small sweaty venue – Trivium took to the stage.
The lights went down as their instrumental piece 'The End Of Everything' was played to the crowd who erupted into screams and shouts. The 4 piece band then burst into 'Rain' with guitarist Corey Beaulieu shredding up some intense solos. Singer/guitarist Matt Heafy proved that he was a real showman, running between the three microphones to sing the different verses and jumping onto the amps to play his guitar solos.
They played a set full of old favourites such as 'Ascendancy' and 'Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr' as well as a good selection of new songs such as 'Down From The Sky' and 'Throes Of Perdition' from the album they were there to promote – 'Shogun'.
As expected, Trivium were amazing. It was the first time I had seen them, and it definitely won't be the last. They were confident, comfortable and great with the crowd, proving why they have such a good reputation. I would definitely recommend that you go to one of their shows – you certainly won't be disappointed.
