Brighton council calls for a ban on racist music

news: Thursday 6th December 2007

An all-out ban of music that incites racist, religious or sexist hatred against minorities could be put in place in Brighton.

Brighton council are hoping to ban all music live or recorded that includes any of the above discriminatory content.

The ban appears to have come after the cancellation of a Buju Banton show at the Brighton Concorde 2, with concern over some of the lyrics and their homophobic connotations.

Dee Simson, chairwoman of the council's licensing committee, told the BBC that the ban "will be used in really extreme cases to stop the playing of what's loosely termed murder music".
