It might be a while before we see ‘The Water’ in record stores. Although the recording process is very much underway MacIntyre didn’t have a record label at the time we spoke to him. “I’ve changed record label and at the moment I’ve been talking to various labels but actually don’t have a deal. It’s an unusual situation to be in because I’ve recorded quite a lot of the next album. Something should happen quite soon but it doesn’t really stop me doing what I do creatively”

“I’ve been on Rough Trade and I’ve been on Warner so I’ve experienced an Indie label and a major record label. I kinda feel as I know what I’m after and I just want things to be right before I release anything

With much of the new album recorded it’s more than likely we will be seeing a return to the festival scene for MacIntyre. Surely another appearance at T in the Park is long overdue? “I’d love to be doing a load of festivals over the summer. It’s been two years since I did any festivals so I’m definitely ready for that. The first four years I had of doing this it was just every year I was doing festivals, doing TITP more than anyone else and doing it consecutive years. It was great!

“I’m really looking forward to playing some of the new stuff. It’s some of the most poppy stuff that I’ve ever written. It’s just more driving, more focused and direct than anything I’ve ever released before and I think it will go down great at festivals. So yeah I’d love to be doing festivals this summer.

Fans should be able to get a taste for his new material in the spring time. “I would hope to be back on the road by February/March time. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a record out so its more like just going out and playing all the places for the first time again. I’m exited about the new material and I’m really looking forward to going out and playing it

When asked what to expect from MacIntyre’s new material, he said “it’s a lot more focused. I feel I’m writing some of the best songs I’ve ever written. There’s more guitar on there definitely, and because of that it feels a bit more ballsy”.

Suffering from writers block doesn’t seem to be a problem that MacIntyre deals with. “I can write anywhere. There is no logic to it whatsoever. It could be on a bus, it could be on tour, could be in the bath, it could be absolutely anywhere. As long as you take the time to document it in someway – whether it’s on your mobile phone or whether it just sticks in your head.

“Being in motion helps; Bob Dylan said that. As long as he puts one foot in front of the other something creative comes along. Motion is very good for creativity. If you’re on a plane or train, then you have the time to think. There is something about being able to switch off from everything else like when you’re on a plane and you can’t use your phone. If it is good enough for Bob Dylan it is good enough for me
”

Hopefully it won’t be long before MacIntyre is back on the road, and he is releasing new material. I asked him if his new material will be as cheerful as it has been on previous albums, “Some of the songs that I’ve written recently are a lot more darker, there was a song called ‘Death of a scientist’ (written about the late Dr. David Kelly) on the last album, and I wouldn’t call that cheerful. On this record the title track is called ‘Water’ which is a kinda weird song, I don’t know how to describe it. It reminds me a bit of Nick Cave. I think my music is just evolving which is the way I’d want it to

eGigs would like to thank Colin for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak to us.
