Not quite the Marvin I remember, harassing Bugs Bunny with big, dumb aliens,
but slightly big and dumb besides. A tall lad with a look of Peter Kay about
him and a small guy with a towel rap incoherent pap over a mixture of
samples, though you can not make them out. The sound is awful, ear splitting
and far too loud, even for the Met. One song includes the sound of a police
car (nee nor) but just makes me leave the room until the Martians have gone
home.
Thankfully the set seems to only last about an hour (that may be an
exaggeration, but it seems that way) and then it’s time for the real piss
take rappers from lovely Wales. This is The Christmas Party (Doing It For
The Taxman) tour. Maybe a tour this side of Christmas is not such a good
idea; yes you can play all the horrible seasonal garb between sets, but some
students have left for the holidays or just don’t have the money. And Goldie
Looking Chain have been slow this last year, being dropped by their label.

You can not fault them as a live show; it is hard to watch due to the sheer
number of them bouncing on stage (8 strong), but they are a colourful
bunch, and work the small (but enthusiastic) crowd up. There are plenty of
addidas tracksuits and sweat bands in the crowd, and gold(ish) chains.
‘Guns Don’t Kill People, Rappers Do’ causes a stir, and after some newbies
with various well known samples (NWA – ‘Straight Outta Compton and others),
it’s time for the favourite. Adam Hussain comes out dressed in a blow-up
snowman suit (looks like it’s been nicked from a nice part of town) and it’s
straight into ‘Your Mamma’s Got A Penis’. Great fun, no matter what music
you’re into and they should have had a bigger crowd, though the one present
made up for the lack of numbers.
