Some general info on Dream Machine (from the roadburn festival website)
In the 1960's Brion Gysin described the experience created by his 'Dream Machine' invention as "A multi-dimensional kaleidoscope whirling out through space". 35 years on Dream Machine hope to allow you to hear just what that must have looked like!"
Dream Machine are a new instrumental progressive spacerock band and their brand new CD, "Trilogia", combines the talents of assorted ex-band members from groups like Thunderdogs, Damidge and Ozric Tentacles together the first time as a unit. "Trilogia" has been sold and distributed by Rubbish Records since October '05.
DM are to play their album launch party at Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush, London, 27th November 2005, and this concert is being filmed for DVD release next year.
Words | Alex Pym
Dream Machine began 2 years ago as the brainchild of Gabriele Tosti, bass player from The Thunderdogs. Gabs had played with several experimental line-ups, all including keyboard player Julian Adamoli, when he invited Alex Pym to join rehearsals. Gabs and Alex had played together in Oligopoli, but had known each other from when Alex was in Damidge.
Damidge included Seaweed [Ex-Ozrics/Thunderdogs], Rad [Ex-Ozrics] and Roly Wynne [original Ozric Tentacles bass maestro]. The Thunderdogs included Gabs, Seaweed & Gavin [Ex-Ozrics]. Gabs had replaced the original Thunderdogs bass player - Roly Wynne - who went on to join Damidge.
With Gabs, Julian and Alex in the DM line-up, Rad was brought in on drums and we played their first gig at the Joiners Arms in Peckham -a party for a friend who was leaving the UK for Belgium. In the audience were John [Champignon, frontman and flute player for Ozrics] and Seaweed. John had his flutes with him and joined the band onstage. Seaweed joined them for their next gig at the Grove Tavern in Wimbledon.
Seaweed remains as a guest artist for both gigs and recording whilst Champignon is a permanent member following his departure from Ozrics earlier this year. Maurizio Rossi, a graduate of the NYC Drummers Collective in Manhattan, has now taken over from Rad on Drums.
On 15th July 2005 DM decided to record live at Husky Studios bringing in Stuart McLean as producer and engineer. The recording was not intended to be for public release but we were so pleased with the results that Champignon and Seaweed added overdubs and 'Trilogia' was born. The initial recording session was completed in 4 hours.
'Trilogia' is a unique recording. Originally intended as a blueprint for a further studio recording we decided that there were improvised moments on 'Trilogia' that could not be repeated in a recording studio environment.
TRILOGIA > Track by track...
Invisible Maze
A 'dot' [delay effect] guitar track inspired by Steve Hillage. I'm a huge Hillage fan and this track is a live favourite. The 'breakdown' section in the middle of the track allows us to get away from the confines of the delay time signature.
Macchina Dread
Rhythm section inspired dub exploration with brilliant flute and Duduk playing from Champignon. If you have never heard John playing before this is the track to hear.
Trilogia Dei Sogni - [Trilogy of Dreams]
This track splits into 3 sections: [i] Scoiattolo Volante [The Flying Squirrel], a funk work out from Gabs, with a superb flute counterpoint. Soaring solos from Alex, Seaweed and Julian.
[ii] Above & Below. Chill time! Seaweed doing what he does best. We're not sure where this section begins or ends!
[iii] Flying Carpet. Vertical take-off! Aptly named track, again we don't know where it begins but there is a very definite ending!
