i saw them on Monday night at the Festival Hall. After the first song, he should have said "I hope you like that one, as the next hour and a half is going to be nearly all the same...."!
I was really looking forward to it, 'Beautiful Freak' is one of my all time favourite albums, I'd heard the new double, but hadn't had much chance to get acquainted with it, and apart from a couple of exceptions, the whole show was new stuff. I think if you're going to do a show that is soley promoting you're latest album, you should advertise it as such. It seems like an act of supreme arrogance to think an audience of 3,000 punters is going to like you're latest stuff before most of 'em had a chance to hear it. And he could have thrown more familiar songs every now and again. My brother reminded me that we went to see The Who doing almost all of Quadrophenia when it had only just come out, but they started with 20 minutes or so of oldies, with another 40 minutes or so towards the end (My Generation, bits of Tommy etc), and they were considerd the best live band IN THE WORLD at that time (they were tongue.gif )
He had a string quartet, which was nice, but it would have been even nicer if he'd used it a bit more sparingly, but (almost) every song had the same feel, same tempo, same tune half the time (at leat that's what it felt like).
At the end, when the audience were applauding (not particularly enthusiastically I thought), my sister leaned over to me and wondered whether they were clapping in the hope that they might do some slightly more uplifting songs, and each time they started another encore, sounding like the last one, there was an almost audible sense of disappointment...
I can't face listening to the new songs now. I think it might have been the most disappointing gig I've been to!!
