news: Saturday 11th November 2006

American R&B singer Gerald Levert has died aged 40. He passed away in his sleep on Friday November 10th, after suffering an apparent heart attack. Levert was the son of Eddie Levert, former lead singer of 70’s soul group The O’Jays. They had both just returned from a 10 day trip to South Africa, where they had met with Nelson Mandela.

Levert sang with his brother in the R&B trio LeVert. He had a UK top 10 single in 1987 with Casablanca. In 1992 Levert he had a number one hit with Baby hold on to me which was recorded with his father. Levert was also nominated for a grammy for writing Practice what you preach in 1994, which was performed by Barry White.

eGigs would like to express our deepest sympathies for his family.
